Director of the Interfacultary Research Center of Biomaterials at the University of Liège and General Secretary of BioLiège Association
Prof. Christian Grandfils
After a PhD in fundamental biochemistry, Ch. Grandfils has pursued post-doc activities in polymer sciences with applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical areas. After spending one year as head of a new research group specialized in the development of new drug delivery systems within Janssen Research Foundation, he came back to the University of Liège and decided to found the CEIB to promote an interdisciplinary research within its Institution.
Research topics of CEIB are mainly focused on the :
-
optimization of new drug delivery systems, with amongst other their applications for the functionalisation of biomaterials
-
tissue engineering based on the development of new biodegradable hydrogels
-
hemocompatibilty study of functionalized polycations
This research is performed in collaboration with several international research centers but also with laboratories issued from emerging countries.
To promote interaction with Companies the CEIB offers a wide variety of analytical services performed according to quality control procedure. These tasks cover the field of material characterization, colloids and particle size analysis as well as the in vitro testing of the biocompatibility materials according to ISO rules.
The implication of Prof. Ch. Grandfils in the regional life science arena comes from the fact that he is convinced of the crucial need to promote education and research/development activities at an international level and in close collaboration with industrial partners. The Euregional interaction “Meuse Rhine Triangle” represents from this point of view an ideal seed and catalyst to support biotechnology activities and to strengthen our reputation at the European Community level.
