Since the start up of the Med-Tech Center in Aachen in 2004, the occupancy rate has risen and now in July this year it is full. Recent interesting additions have been CanControls, a company that specializes in the non-intrusive analysis of facial mimicry. They are experts on digital image processing for advanced man-machine interaction - for intelligent computer systems that can optically recognize human facial expression and gestures.

There has also been a specialist in dental implants, CC&A Medical Components. The center is close to the university and other research institutes, including the three Fraunhofer institutes, the Institute for Biomedical Technology in the Helmholtz Institute and the Physics and Engineering Institute.

Forty-seven life science companies have found a place since it opened in 1994 as start-ups, and many of these have already spread in the region, including the innovative high-tech mNemoscience GmbH (intelligent polymers), hemoteq GmbH (surface coating) and Abiomed Europe, which started as Impella CardioSystems AG, (intra-corporeal micro blood pumps for use in coronary surgery and cardiology).

In 1994 there was strong demand and the center was expanded by 4,250m2. Currently there are 27 companies at the location which employ more than 150 staff. The number of technology-oriented start-ups with subsidies in the first five years was around 76%; this year it’s even more.

AGIT provides start-ups and other companies with a med-tech orientation with properly equipped premises. The center provides its tenants with office rooms, labs and protected working areas with clean rooms and grey rooms.

AGIT isn’t only renting out property; it offers businesses a service in the start-up and growth phase. It also offers the assistance of business specialists and life science experts, support-technology-based businesses with special services tailor-made for the tenant companies. And the occupancy rate proves that it is in great demand.
